The Ellis Mentoring Program
The heart of our work is in mentoring. It’s the college coaching that makes Ellis Scholars succeed. We direct our students towards college success. Our proven mentoring program continues to grow with the goal of degree completion. And it works! Ellis Scholars graduate at a rate nearly TWICE the national average!
The entire Ellis staff has a mentoring mindset. We’re available to help students make the transition from high school to college and from college to career. Ours is a complete approach to college success. This year, we have a new Mentoring Coordinator, a former Ellis Scholar. She is committed to helping students succeed, and meets with Ellis Scholars through campus visits or one-on-one interaction.
A Systematic Approach
We have an entrepreneurial mindset when it comes to our non-profit work. We expect results. We are currently implementing a series of integrated technologies that will help us automate our administrative tasks so we can personalize our mentoring program. These technologies will help us better track our performance and maintain a small, but efficient, staff.
Statistics show that the risk of dropping out is greatest during the freshman year. We address this risk by matching every incoming freshman with an Ellis Mentor. As each new school year begins, we gather the mentor pairings for a meet-and-greet on campus.
We expect all Ellis Scholars to participate in community-service projects. Among other activities, the Ellis Community has gathered to volunteer at a homeless shelter and has assisted in relief efforts after the Joplin, Missouri tornado.
As our students progress through their college career, we encourage them to form pre-career networks. We look for students with similar degrees and encourage peer mentoring from Ellis Scholars as well as direct input from Ellis Alums.
All Ellis Scholars are required to provide at least one written update each semester. These notes provide an interesting indication of student progress and help to create affinity between our students and their sponsors.
We encourage our students to minimize debt by working part-time during college and by exploring additional scholarship opportunities.
At The Ellis Foundation, we invest in future leaders and see philanthropy as an important trait to be fostered among our students. Ellis Scholars sign a non-binding covenant, agreeing to reach out to other Ellis Scholars in the future.
